2 Chainz released his mixtape T.R.U REALigion in 2011 and appeared on Kanye West's “Mercy” and Nicki Minaj's “Beez in the Trap”. The first single from his solo album "No Lies", a duet with Drake, was released the following year. Based on a T.R.U Story was a hit when it was released on August 14, 2012. 2 Chainz's debut solo album sold almost half a million copies and won four trophies at the BET Hip Hop Awards.

2 Chainz was then voted “Man of the Year 2012” by hip-hop magazine The Source.
